My husband and I did a road trip from San Francisco Bay Area down to Santa Monica, CA the weekend before July 4th. We planned this short getaway as my parents were in town visiting us and were going to watch the kids for us. Who doesn’t love that? 😉
We left on Friday evening (June 29th) at around 5:30pm and did a night stop in Bakersfield, CA and drove for another 2 hours the next morning. The only traffic jam we ran into was in the Gilroy —> Pacheco Pass area, that place is almost always insanely crowded, so I would suggest leaving a little later if you don’t want to be standing on the road for an hour or two.
Where we stayed:
We checked into Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows. Our first room was in a smaller brick building on the 5th floor. We had a poolside view. The room had a nice big bathroom and a pretty large walk in closet which fit both our suitcases and all the things we had (tripid, backpacks etc).
What we really loved about our room was that everything was bookable through a tablet. So we could book housekeeping, in room dining, valet, front desk, hair salon, spa, you name it – through the tablet. And we almost always got our breakfast on time within 30 minutes and there was no need to sign anything as we placed the order through the tablet.
We wanted a better view, so we checked in at front desk who immediately bumped us up to a room for just an extra $150 a night with an Uh-mazing view! (see below) It’s usually $300 more but he gave us a $150 discount and it was so worth it!
This room had a smaller bathroom, however we had a private balcony, a view of Santa Monica, the pier and the beach. The only downside to this room was that it was facing an event hall where people were partying with really LOUD music all day long. We couldn’t hear anything if we closed our balcony doors but we couldn’t leave it open during the day for longer than 30 minutes, it was just too much noise. So make sure to check in with front desk on the noise level, the room comes at a noise cost.
We dined at both the lounge and at ‘The Fig‘ restaurant. Both restaurants met our expectations, the lounge just took a lot longer to get the food out. The food itself was delicious. I had the fish tacos and my husband had the chicken shawarma wrap on one of the days and we also tried the carrot cake with ice cream which was so yummy!
We also ate at Bangkok West Thai cuisine and their yellow curry is the best we’ve ever had. Service was very friendly too. Definitely worth the visit!
Things to do:
My husband and I were here to mostly relax, so we spent the mornings and evenings at the following places and napped every afternoon
- Spent some time at the pool
- Walked to Santa Monica beach which was just across the street
- Drove to the Santa Monica pier, which is only 5 mins away
- Walked to downtown Santa Monica and did some shopping at the mall and browsed through the local stores.
- Drove to Venice beach and the boardwalk which is about 2-3 miles away.
Overall our stay was excellent. We loved Santa Monica and Venice beach. A lovely place to spend a few days either with your partner or family!
